Let me be clear about one thing. There is no cookie cutter method that everyone can follow to solve the issue of obesity. Or maybe there is. We know with proper exercise and healthy moderate eating habits we can maintain a healthy lifestyle (we have increased our internet usage dramatically while decreasing simplicities such as walking.) We know that eating fast food regularly is extremely unhealthy (yet we are counting calories for a mini pizzas or enthralled with the idea of a child getting to choose apples over fries with their happy meal.) We have learned to cut down on grocery spending or at the very least get the best bang for our buck in big box stores (instead we buy boxes of powder or jars of preservatives that contain ingredients we don’t recognize let alone can pronounce). It should not be surprising when shows like Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution comes on and kids have no clue what vegetables are.
•In 1990, among states participating in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 10 states had a prevalence of obesity less than 10% and no state had prevalence equal to or greater than 15%.
•By 2000, no state had a prevalence of obesity less than 10%, 23 states had a prevalence between 20–24%, and no state had prevalence equal to or greater than 25%.
•In 2010, no state had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Thirty-six states had a prevalence equal to or greater than 25%; 12 of these states (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia) had a prevalence equal to or greater than 30%.
There is a solution to all of this. Eat dinner together as a family (it’s not a definition it’s a mindset). Take 40 minutes to connect with distractions. Turn off the TV, get everyone OFF the couch and into the kitchen. Take a walk after dinner and connect. You will go to bed happy!
